Steeled against the storm

So don't complain about your useless employment/Jack it in forever tonight/Or shut your mouth and pretend you enjoy it/Think of all the money you've got - The Clash

It's been a troublesome time. During the course of a single week it appeared both Laura and I might be about to lose our jobs!! Well you can imagine. Hence the lack of online activity recently, on this blog as well as my twitter feed.

The good news is I'm still employed despite another restructuring of staff. The bad news is Laura may need to look elsewhere for some part-time work. Life's a rollercoaster as I believe a young Ronan Keating once proclaimed.

It still blows my mind that here I am, right in the middle of truly grown up concerns about paying the mortgage, providing for my son and supporting my wife. I remember so vividly when I used to joke about the absurdity of waking up 'AM' but since September I can't remember rising post 08:00!

Please believe me when I say I'm not complaining. As worrying as uncertainty over the future of a job can be, it also steels you against the oncoming storm. There is an irony of course in that facing work politics and power struggles brings with it a certain inherent freedom. Rather than choking the life out of you, it adds a zeal and zest to your quest for fulfillment elsewhere.

And so it remains. My eagerness to read, listen, watch, chat, drink, eat, sing, play, dance is heightened not diminished. There must be at least some truth in the adage 'Work shall set you free'.
